21st Century Type Labor Activities Based on Barnard’s Theory

The theoretical backbone of the 20th century type labor activities was based on the Marx Principle. From a political view, the Marx Principle is widely known to be defeated, but it is still firmly existent in the in labor union activities.

A typical example of the existence can be seen defined in the 2nd chapter of the of labor union law. “In this law, a ‘labor union’ is defined as a group or a association of groups whose main purpose is to improve and maintain the working conditions, and raise other economic status of workers, organized primarily by the workers.”

As indicated in the provision mentioned above, the foundation of the Japanese labor law is based on a level relationship of “paid workers and capital”, which is inclined to the perception of the Marx economic theory.

The 21st century type labor union activity does not view the labor union from the conventional economic/labor (Marx) law theory, but instead from an economic/psychological perspective, directing from a renewed viewpoint.
Additionally, a 21st century type labor union expands its objective from a limited “economic compensation” to adding the achievement of the essence of human desire, a “compensation of the soul”, making changes in the organizational structure by redefining the labor union.

In order to accomplish this change, we redefine the purpose of the labor union based on the third element (common goal, contribution, cooperative motivation, and communication) of an organization as identified in Barnard’s theory.
Make our workplace a “good work place”.
From an “group of laborers” to an “group of professionals (workmanship)”.
In group or individual labor relations, labor authoritative will transpire by management and problems will be resolved in a win-win situation for all.

A 21st century type labor union activity is redefined to attain the objectives mentioned and the contribution and cooperative will of the executive members, to include the relationships with the members of the union, indicate the activities to streamline the communication measures.

The 21st century type labor union activity’s social responsibility is to balance out the four customers of the labor union.
The four customers are 1) union members; 2) executive members; 3) management; and 4) community and society. Furthermore, bearing in mind the market of the vast number of non-permanent employees existing in the background of 1) the union members, marketing of such individuals will be enhanced.

Yet, the customer trend in this marketing is not “to accept all selfishness”. We will maintain our identity, and will not tolerate our services.

Recently, the sphere of an individual labor relation has expanded. In a 20th century type labor union activity, each problem that emerges from an individual is shifted to a group labor relations, which does not genuinely resolve the problem because the individuality is diminished. “The labor union should not be providing the solution, but should be learning and educating the method to resolution.”

It is required that the union establishes self-assessment training in the core of its activity so that each individual member will be able to discuss and negotiate with confidence.
In addition, it is important to take account of enhancing each individual’s professionalism (work ethics), in the union’s activity, such as evaluating and improving one’s social skills, to include mental health and work life balance.

The BNU will actively operate based on the above principles, and by individuals with the same understanding working together, we will enhance the status of the employees working on base, and establish a safe and lively work environment.
